Movement aims to educate, register, & energize transgender voters & allies

NORTHAMPTON, MA – Transhealth is proud to announce its participation in the TRANSform the VOTE campaign, a nationwide movement of transgender and gender-diverse people and allies seeking to make their voices heard at the ballot box. A project of Advocates for Transgender Equality (A4TE), this campaign focuses on educating trans and gender-diverse people about their rights, registering voters, and energizing people to get to the polls on November 5, 2024.

“We are excited to be part of the TRANSform the VOTE campaign,” said Joan Erwin (all pronouns), RN, BSN, CEO of Transhealth. “By working in coalition with other organizations throughout the country to get out the vote, we can help ensure that everyone has the opportunity to make their voice heard and can contribute to a more just and equitable society.”

With increasingly restrictive ID laws and growing anti-trans bias across the nation, there is concern that some trans and gender-diverse people whose IDs do not match their gender identity and expression may face barriers when attempting to cast their ballots.

“It’s crucial for trans and gender-diverse people to know that they have a right to vote, regardless of their gender or appearance and that their voice matters,” said Josie Caballero (she/her), Director of Voting and Elections at A4TE. “Voting is a powerful tool to advocate for our rights, influence policy changes, and ensure that our needs and experiences are represented. Everyone deserves to have their say in shaping the future, especially in a system that directly impacts our lives.”

As part of their involvement, Transhealth has created a campaign landing page where anyone, regardless of their location in the U.S., can register to vote, check their registration status, request an absentee ballot, see what’s on their own ballot, and set election reminders. They’ve also launched a social media campaign to educate the trans and gender-diverse community about their voting rights and to empower them to exercise their right to vote.

“Trans and gender-diverse people are fighting for our lives in this election,” added Erwin. “We know that when trans and gender-diverse people and their allies mobilize and vote, they make an impact.”
