Dear Friends,

Many of us in the trans and gender-diverse community are grieving the results of the presidential election. And we have a lot to be angry about. In this election, our lives were used as political fodder to fan the flames of fascism. And in casting their ballots, millions of Americans have turned their backs on the LGBTQ community.

So, where do we go from here? I am reminded of a quote by trans non-binary writer and activist Kai Cheng Thom who said, “Those who have survived the unthinkable are also those who know how to create a better world – because it’s ended for us before.” It is in moments like these that we are called upon to remember that we have walked through fire and darkness before and have survived, emerging into the light stronger and more vibrant than ever. Because that’s who we are and will continue to be, even through the darkness that is now descending on our nation. We will not back down or slink away quietly for the comfort or political expediency of those who find our existence inconvenient. We will continue to fight, we will continue to build powerful, supportive community, we will continue to laugh, love, dance, and make art, and we will continue to organize and lead with compassion.

And what about Transhealth? Our work is now even more important than ever. We are dug in deep, locked in, and not going anywhere. We vow to be here for you, providing essential medical and mental healthcare, and community support. We will fight alongside you, shoulder to shoulder, in the greatest act of resistance, for your right to be your authentic self.

Breathe. Stay strong. We will do more than get through this. We will continue to survive, thrive, and rise together just as our community has for countless generations.

In Solidarity,
Joan Erwin, RN, BSN (any pronouns)
